Mayor’s Commission on African and Caribbean Immigrant Affairs

“The Commission seeks to foster understanding about the continent of Africa. It will create public awareness on the rich history, geography, and culture of a continent recognized as the birthplace of mankind, and engage members of the African, African Diaspora and American communities in a fruitful dialogue on how to strengthen bilateral relationships.

Some of their goals are:

  • “To facilitate mutually beneficial cultural exchange in the areas of education, the arts,science,commerce, and business communication.”
  • “To promote harmonious relationships between the City of Philadelphia, the African Diaspora and the nations of Africa.”
  • “To provide a platform for discussion and debate on current affairs.”

Some of their activities and interests include:

  • “free monthly interactive Commission Meetings to promote and inform the African and Caribbean immigrants of activities occurring within the Philadelphia Immigrant Community.
  • collaboration with African and Caribbean affiliated organizations in health fairs, college fairs, cultural programs, political events, galas, and round-table discussions on current issues. representation at conferences locally, state-wide, nation-wide and internationally to promote education, job security, cultural enrichment and immigration issues.
  • Promote business and trade agreements on behalf of the African and Caribbean Communities.
  • Assist Immigrants with accessing city services through the office of Councilwoman Jannie L. Blackwell (3rd district – West Philadelphia)
  • Volunteers responsibilities will range from planning special projects, hosting events, assisting during the welcoming events to visiting delegation of various countries.” *
